With her blond hair and blue eyes, Heather Graham is undeniably one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood. However, she is more than just a pretty face. Here are seven interesting facts about the actress.
She is a yoga and transcendental meditation aficionado
Want to know the secret behind Heather Graham’s looks? According to the actress, she is a yoga aficionado, admitting to People Magazine that she is “obsessed” with it. She credits the practice for her fit body, although she revealed in another interview that she also does Pilates to tone her physique.
She is a fan of transcendental meditation as well, which she learned from director David Lynch while they were working together on Twin Peaks.
She is a scriptwriter and a director
Graham may have more than two decades’ worth of experience appearing in front of the camera. However, with Half Magic, she experienced some changes in her role. Albeit she’s one of the main stars of the film, she’s also the writer and director.
While it was her first time to handle both tasks, she wasn’t entirely on unfamiliar ground. In fact, she wrote the script for the sex comedy flick based on her own and her friends’ failed relationships. She admitted in several interviews that she drafted the story following a bad breakup, saying that she did it to make herself laugh. However, when she read what she wrote, she realised that it’s actually something worth telling on the silver screen.
She is an advocate against sexism in Hollywood
Her failed relationship may have been the springboard from which she began writing the script for Half Magic, but Graham declared that it was the sexism in Hollywood that pushed her to make the film. She told Salon that most of the films and shows in Hollywood are told from the male perspective, and often limited women’s roles as background characters included primarily for their looks. She said that Half Magic is a reaction to the issue.
While she was quick to give credit to the roles she was given, she wished for more projects that not only star women, but also tell stories from their perspective. She said, “Girls are described as ‘pretty’ or ‘ugly’ or ‘she’s a 10 or a 2’ — it’s so disrespectful. So my film is about what it’s like for females to tell stories in a male-driven business.”
She champions children’s rights
Graham is a part of Children International. She is also a benefactor of the Cambodian Children’s Fund, and she travels to the country every once in a while to visit the children. She also hosts fundraisers to generate money for the NGO.
She is foxy – literally and figuratively
Earlier this year, Graham was announced as the latest celebrity endorser for British gaming site Foxy Bingo. The latest series of ads showed the actress playing the company’s mascot, Foxy – it’s worth nothing that the identity of the mascot had been hidden for many years prior to the unveiling. Graham revealed in an interview with the Express that she took on the role because it was “super absurd” and she likes wacky comedies. It’s a part of the company’s rebranding and expansion strategy, which includes delving into the mobile gaming world through the Foxy Bingo iTunes app to attract a wider audience. With Graham being a sex symbol, she’s certainly the foxiest choice for the character.
She turned down a role in Heathers
Graham actually got offered to be one of the Heathers in Heathers, but she declined the role because her parents were hesitant to have her play in an expletive-laden film. The role eventually went to Lisanne Falk. Some of the other films that she nearly featured in include Chicago as Roxie Hart and Dirty Dancing as Baby Houseman.
She is an indie film veteran
Graham might be best known for her roles in mainstream movies such as the Hangover films and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, but the actress is also a regular in independent films. Her latest indie film was Wetlands where she took on the scene-stealing role of Savannah, the ex-wife of disgraced cop Babel “Babs” Johnson played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
