Finally, Manchester United Get Their Man, Bruno Fernandes

Valentine Chinyem

After much speculations on the media, English Premiership side, Manchester United, have succeeded in signing their long term transfer target, Bruno Fernandes.

The elated Portuguese midfielder arrived Old Trafford for his medical on Wednesday from Portuguese side, Sporting Lisbon after both clubs reached an agreement of £47 million.

However, add-ons could see the overall cost rise to £67.7 million.

Bruno Fernandes who was named the Portuguese league’s player of the year in 2018 and 2019, said he will do “everything” to bring “success and trophies” to his new club.

While adding that he fell in love with the ‘Red Devils’ while watching his Portuguese team mate, Cristiano Ronaldo play for the club.

“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club,” he said.

“I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.

“I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team,” he added.

Spanish giant, FC Barcelona had equalled Manchester United’s bid for the Portuguese in a late move to hijack the deal from the red’s, however, a clause within Barcelona’s contract indicated the player would be loaned out to its Spanish rival, Valencia CF, which the player refused, saying he does not want to play for Valencia.

Bruno Fernandes whose deal runs till 2025 is not the first player to sign for the Reds from Sporting Lisbon, as Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Marcos Rojo all joined the club from Sporting in the past.

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was visibly pleased with his new signing, described the midfielder as a fantastic signing.

He added that, “Bruno’s goals and assists stats speak for themselves. He will be a fantastic addition to our team and he will help us push on in the second part of the season.

“We have been tracking Bruno for many months and everyone here has been tremendously impressed with all his attributes and what he will bring to this team.

“Most importantly, he is a terrific human being with a great personality and his leadership qualities are clear for all to see.”

With this signing, Solksjaer would be more than willing to bring in more legs into his team before the transfer window closes by 12 midnight.

More so,  it is already being speculated that he is looking into signing another striker as a back-up to injured Marcos Rashord, with Odion Ighalo, Teemo Pukki or Josh King as his primary target.

Others who are rumoured to be heading to the club before deadline day this winter are, Dries Mertens, Danny Ings, Edinson Cavani or Salomon Rondon.

However, whoever makes it into this Manchester United side this winter, will be expected to bring the much needed experience and goals the team has been struggling to get since Ole Gunnar Solksjaer took charge at the club.
